Whilst being rescued and placed in a dog shelter is better than life on the streets, being a dog that stays in a shelter for a long time can be a devastating situation both mentally and physically.
Whilst I don’t mean anything against the carers and owners of the shelters, however much they want to, it’s simply impossible to give as much love to 50 different dogs in the shelter at any one time, as they need. That’s just a simple fact of life, that can’t be avoided. So from a physical point of view whilst the dogs may get regular exercise food and water, they won’t get all of the love and fun of a normal home.
From a mental perspective dogs are intelligent animals who like the company of humans, and also can work out pretty quickly what happens. When someone comes to view them and then walks away, they know that’s another chance at adoption gone, and if you can imagine how it must feel day after day after day getting your hopes up, only to have them smashed, it will give you some idea of what a dog goes through. In this video, we get to meet Benny a dog who has spent way too long in his Animal Shelter. But today is the day his life takes a sudden change for the better, this touching video shows his reaction when he is introduced to his new family and it’s pretty spectacular.
